Change is a'comin?

So Memphis is now (or as of 2013) an AQ status football team. Well, alright then…..whats baring anyone from getting in at this point? Western Kentucky? UTSA? Appalachian St? The Big East apparently has instituted ‘the mirror’ test trying to fill the void of teams abandoning ship left and right. I get that; but Memphis? The team that has won MAYBE 5 games in 5 years? Wow. At least with the Big Ten finally stepping up (and actually contributing) to the playoff negotiation table, maybe we won’t have to see the lame excuse of an AQ conference that is the Big East weasel their way in anywhere anymore. I like the Big Ten proposal…..it takes the Top 4 teams in the BCS; institutes a committee (much like the NCAA Tournament) to determine if in special cases like this year with Oregon/Stanford (Stanford was 4th in the BCS, Oregon was 5th….but Oregon hammered Stanford and had legin loses to USC and LSU) the #5 team deserved to get in above the #4 team. By the way, to ensure the regular season doesn’t lose any of its umph, the Top 2 teams get homefield advantage. So in effect, this year’s ‘playoff’ would have looked something like this:

#4 Oregon (in over Stanford) at #1 LSU
#3 Oklahoma St at #2 Alabama

There’s something you can sink your teeth into. The results probably would have been the same; but who knows, maybe Oregon could have pulled the upset. Anyway, as a College Football purist; this pretty much satisfies my worry about protecting the pageantry that separates the College game from the NFL business. It keeps the regular season important…..and it returns the Bowls to their committees……so the Orange Bowl is no longer forced to take a Big East/ACC snooze fest. The Rose Bowl can still have its Pac-12/Big Ten ties…..and the Sugar Bowl can still take an SEC team. Yeah, there’ll still be controversy….but how fun would it be to see an SEC school actually have to travel to a northern sight to play a semi-final game? I’d be glued to the TV.

  1. Just for kicks…using the playoff format the Big Ten has proposed; here’s what we would have seen over the past 14 years (the existence of the BCS)

    1998: #4 Ohio St at #1 Tennessee
#3 Kansas St at #2 Florida St

    1999: #4 Alabama at #1 Florida St
#3 Nebraska at #2 Virginia Tech

    2000: #4 Washington at #1 Oklahoma
#3 Miami at #2 Florida St

    2001: #4 Oregon at #1 Miami
    #3 Colorado at #2 Nebraska

    2002: #4 USC at #1 Miami
#3 Georgia at #2 Ohio St

    2003: #4 Michigan at #1 Oklahoma
    #3 USC at #2 LSU

    2004: #4 Texas at #1 USC
    #3 Auburn at #2 Oklahoma

    2005: #4 Ohio St at #1 USC
#3 Penn St at #2 Texas

    2006: #4 LSU at #1 Ohio St
    #3 Michigan at #2 Florida

    2007: #4 Oklahoma at #1 Ohio St
#3 Virginia Tech at #2 LSU

    2008: #4 Alabama at #1 Oklahoma
    #3 Texas at #2 Florida

    2009: #4 TCU at #1 Alabama
    #3 Cincinnati at #2 Texas

    2010: #4 Stanford at #1 Auburn
    #3 TCU at #2 Oregon

There’s some pretty interesting cross-country games in there…..too bad we’ll never see them. Notice though; Boise St still would have never had a shot, even with a 4 game format. I think that’s fine and the way it should be (or should have been? Past-present is melting); but I know some would/would’ve thrown a fit.

  2. Georgia's President Michael Adams expects a four or EIGHT team playoff in 2014:

  3. ASU president throws out an 8 team proposal he will present to other Pac 12 presidents and says Pac 12 does NOT support the current system as it is causing long term harm to the sport. Personally, I think their hypocrisy on the issues (claiming the extra playoff games would be bad for student-athlete's health while approving a 12th regular season game for one example) hurts the colleges, not just athletics. The presidents of institutions of higher education are lacking intellectual integrity.

  4. http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/big-east-west-virginia-reach-agreement-on-exit-021012

Official announcement expected today according to WVU source. Agreement looks like this: 15 million damages 5 million exit fee Big 12 is contributing 9 million cash (from other sources it looks like a loan to WVU) and WVU is contributing 11 million from a combination of cash, previous payments ($2.5 million on exit fee) and withholdings from conference distributions due WVU.

  5. Meeting Sunday between CUSA and MWC. Rumored to finalize the merger. Looks like it's only a matter of time now. With eight teams each now no one will have to move and no need to raid the WAC or Sun Belt.
