Game 3: #22 Penn State at #11 Virginia Tech

Before we get to the playoff, here are some reality bites:

SB Nation has a good article about how the new schedules may eliminate some of the old SEC rivalries including Georgia/Auburn and Alabama/Tennessee:

CUSA and MWC have announced a merger combining to form a completely new conference one containing 18-24 teams.  The idea includes having 4 pods much like
the old 16 team WAC had.  There will be a conference championship game ofcourse, but what makes this conference unique is that they will also have semifinal games
leading up to the conference championship.  Under current NCAA rules semifinal games are not allowed; so look for a petition from this new conference for a rule change.
Read about the merger here:

http://www.themwc.com/genrel/021312aab.html or the official announcement from the MWC

there has been no word about who the addition teams to join this conference will be; they are looking to add anywhere from 2 to 6 more teams to get to the announced 18-24 team league.  My guess would be Utah St, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Temple, and a few other of the MAC schools willing to leave.  I'll provide those rumors though when they start to arise.

Kyle Veazy writes a good article here about the Big East's pursuing of Memphis:

The NCAA is dealing with opposition against multil year scholarships.  A 5/8 or 222 vote majority is required to rescind the change.  Voting takes place Monday, read about it here:
Now on to the playoffs.

Game 3:  #22 Penn St at #11 Virginia Tech

December 17, 2011
Kickoff: 11:00 am
Location: Blacksburg, Virginia

EA Sports Ratings:        Penn St, Overall: A-, Offense: A-, Defense: A-
Virginia Tech, Overall: A-, Offense: B+, Defense: B+

Penn St limps into this game after a tumultuous end of the year while Virginia Tech tries to recover from their second loss of the season at the hands of the Clemson Tigers (the second of which cost the Hokies the ACC Championship).  These teams both win playing sound defense and ball control offense. The offenses both feature elite running backs in Silas Redd from Penn St and David Wilson from Virginia Tech.  This would be an even match and a good first round game to watch in a playoff setting.

1st Quarter:
-After both teams trade punts, Virginia Tech scores with a 2 yard TD run from
 David Wilson                                                                                                       (7-0 Va Tech)

-Penn St takes the ensuing drive and matches with a 2 yard TD run from
 Silas Redd                                                                                                           (7-7 Tied)

a 13 yard TD pass from Matt McGloin to Justin Brown, but the XP is missed  (13-7 Penn St)

2nd Quarter:
-Penn St again intercepts Logan Thomas and scores with a 3 yard TD run
from Matt McGloin                                                                                                (20-7 Penn St)

-After trading a few punts back and forth, Penn St gets in FG range and
scores with a 27 yard FG from Anthony Fera                                                     (23-7 Penn St)

3rd Quarter:
-Penn St receives the 2nd half kickoff, but fumbles the return. Va Tech
recovers but can’t find the endzone settling for a 24 yard FG by Justin Myer     (23-10 Penn St)

-Virginia Tech takes the next drive and scores with a 14 yard TD run from
             Jarrett Boykin.                                                                                                          (23-17 Penn St)

-Virginia Tech comes right back down the field with a 1 yard TD run from
             David Wilson                                                                                                            (30-24 Penn St)

4th Quarter:
